Description
Very similar to other residences nearby, including the one at 768 N. First Avenue, this is a one-story turn-of-the-century cottage. Nearly symmetrical in design, the building is sheathed with medium clapboard and edged with endboards. The hipped roof is accented with a central hipped dormer and a flaring boxed cornice. A diamond-paned window flanked by vents fills the face of the dormer. Three concrete steps with stone stair walls in the center of the facade lead to a full front porch. The porch is enclosed by four turned wood posts and screens resting on a low wall. Three openings, a central door and two windows with transom-like upper sash, overlook the porch. Except for the porch screens, the cottage is unaltered and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: The assessment record indicates that there was no improvement on this lot in 1903, during the ownership of D.H. Robertson. Neither was any house shown on the 1907 Sanborn. However, Francis Bowers acquired the parcel in 1906-07 and was noted in residence by the 1907 directory. His profession was described as merchant in 1907 and as "clerk Upland Candy Kitchen" in 1911. George Bowers became the assessed owner in 1914; he was a jeweler and watch maker with George Crane on Second Avenue.
