Description

This turn-of-the-century cottage is distinguished by a variation on the hipped roof theme. The hip of the main roof is echoed by a smaller roof over the raised south half of the facade and by a central hipped roof dormer. Notched rafter tails punctuate the eaves. The cottage has been altered by the application of rustic, vertical wood siding. Located at the inner corner of the projecting bay, the entry is framed by an extended lintel with angled ends. Similar framing appears around the casement windows in the bays to either side of the entry. In good condition, the building occupies a lot separated from the street by a pierced cement block garden wall. RESEARCH NOTES: Erected between 1907 and 1912 according to the Sanborns, this house was probably built by Grace H. Paulin, who assumed a lengthy ownership in 1907. The previous year the property had been assessed to S.S. White. C.D. Paulin lived at this location in 1909 according to the Historic Houses and Sites file. In 1912-13 Patrick McQuillen and Elizabeth McQuillen were shown at this address. McQuillen was the manager of the Upland Pharmacy and more closely associated, as "Mac the Medicine Man," with the house next door (793). The library file also indicates that Charles Paulin was at this address in 1912, Grace Paulin in 1934 (when apparently there were as least 3 boarders), and that Theresa McQuillen was a boarder in 1914. Apparently the house is still in the Paulin family.
